Keeping in mind that the majority of college students started class this week or the week before, this post is for my brother. He's a freshman at UNT (I followed him to college ;)) and I just wanted to share some things I learned in college.
.) Professors generally come out guns blazing. This is supposed to weed out the weenies, but never fails to make you doubt yourself.
.) The first day of any class is always overwhelming. The rubric is a guideline for the semester. Say it with me, the SEMESTER. It can change, and you have a heads up, don't let it scare you, let it prepare you. I laughed at myself writing that because it was cheesy, but it's true.
.) Feel clueless in class sometimes? That is why you are in the class, to learn. Don't be intimidated by the truck loads of new information you're getting, just soak it in (easier said than done, I know).
.) Don't stress out about your assignments that you are stressing out about thanks to your rubric. You'll get them done, whether it's days, weeks, hours or minutes before it's due, it will get done because that is the kind of student you are.
.) Your ego takes more of hit when/if you fail or don't do well. Most people don't look so far into your college history that they notice you took statistics (in my case) twice. If you don't tell people, most don't know/care.
.) If you do fail a class, take it again. It's a bump in the road, it sucks, but you know more the second time around and you aren't the first person to have to do so.
.) Use your resources!!! I was not good at using mine and probably could have done better on papers and other assignments. Use your professors, but don't be a brown noser. Use the writing center. Use everything you can. I'm sure it will pay off.
.) Listen to your parents (and some times your sister). They're usually right.
.) If someone seems/says they are not stressed or struggling, they are lying.
.) Some things you already know and need to remember...you are incredibly smart, you have a huge support group who is always cheering for you, I'll help you study, you are always welcome in our home, and I love you.
I'm not trying to embarrass you, but I know you (and any other college student reading this) can do it. Even if/when there are road blocks. Don't give up, work your ass off, cry, scream, go for a run. Don't give up, because it is so worth it when you have that degree in your hand. I did it, I know without a doubt you can too.
